Baku / 10.05.17 / Turan: Investigation of the case against financial director of "Azadlig" newspaper Faik Amirov completed, and the case has been sent to the Sabail court Baku. According to his lawyer Fakhraddin Mehdiyev, the main charge of the investigation is a large scale tax evasion (Article 213.1 of the Criminal Code), as well as Article 283.1 (incitement to national and religious discord using the media.)
Amirov was arrested on August 20, 2016 and accused of inciting religious hatred, as "representative of Fatullah Gulen" in Azerbaijan. However, very soon the investigation "forgot" about this accusation and began to question Amirov and other employees of the newspaper about the financial situation of the newspaper, trying to establish secret sources of funding. Amirov rejects all accusations as far-fetched, and considers his arrest as a political order to stifle the country's only opposition newspaper. -02D-
