The convicted satirist appeals

On 27 October the Shirvan Court  of Appeal chaired by  Alaskar Novruzov began  consideration of complaint  of a satirical poet Tofig Hasanli. He was convicted of 22 August, 2016 to six years' imprisonment on charges of drug trafficking. Hasanli  is known for his critical pamphlets against the authorities and government officials in a number of media.

In 2005, he was convicted for drugs for three years, but in 2007 was released by amnesty. Hasanli continued to publish satire on facebook and youtube. In January 2015, she said that he was threatened with arrest, and in Otober he was arrested.

According to Turan's lawyer Elchin Sadigov, the complaint is considered a partial re-trial.

This is due to the fact that in the Court of First Instance not all the witnesses were heard. "Today in court Tofig Hasanli said that denies the accusation. He said that he is being persecuted for political reasons for satire," Sadikhov said.

The poet said thathe made a confession under threat of the use of physical force, and the drugs planted on him during his arrest. According to the lawyer, the investigation has used his "staff" of witnesses who  were repeatedly used in other cases. Tofig Hasanli’s rights were grossly violated during the investigation, said Sadigov, adding that the trial will continue on 17 November. -03B06-
