Why does not the government fulfill the demands of Tofig Yagublu and Bahtiyar Hajiyev? What is the purpose?
Baku/16.01.23/Turan: On January 15, Tofig Yagublu stopped a dry hunger strike, but he did not stop the action of hunger strike. Four more people joined the hunger strike started by Tofig Yagublu and Bakhtiyar Hajiyev, and 5 people stopped the hunger strike. One person went on a dry hunger strike to support Tofig Yagublu.
Alzamin Salaev, the chair of the Salyan district branch of the APCP, who has been on a hunger strike for 7 days, refused water on January 15, and began a dry hunger strike. Thus, 20 activists are currently on hunger strike, including Tofig Yagublu, his wife Maya Yagublu and Bahtiyar Hajiyev.
On January 15, Doctor of Medical Sciences Adil Geybulla, together with Tofig Yagublu's daughter Nigar Hazi, met with him and examined him. According to him, Yagublu ended his dry hunger strike and drank some water.
Meanwhile, the organizations of public activist Bahtiyar Hajiyev, the human rights organization "Protection Line", the Center for Legal Initiatives were expelled from their offices.
The US State Department has expressed serious concern about the recent arrests in Azerbaijan, Deputy State Department Spokesman Vedant Patel announced on January 13.
Human rights activist Zaur Akbar talks about all this in the “Difficult Question” program.
According to him, the fact that a hunger strike is being held in the country demanding the release of political prisoners, in which so many people take part, is an indicator of the terrible state of the legal system.
“This suggests that the authorities do not consider their citizens, do not respect their constitutional rights. And the hunger strike by Tofik Yagublu and Bahtiyar Hajiyev is completely legal. Because the authorities, in the most disgusting way, arrested them without any legal basis, on slander.
The fact that Tofig Yagublu stopped the dry hunger strike, but did not stop the hunger strike, indicates that he intends to resist the authoritarian regime and lawlessness to the end. The same can be said about Bahtiyar Hajiyev,” the human rights activist believes.
Zaur Akbar found it difficult to answer the question, “Why don’t the authorities stop repressions against civil society?”
“There is no threat to the authorities either from the United States, or from Europe, or from the Azerbaijani society. I do not have an answer to the question, “Why is it so intolerant, so militant against civil society, independent and opposition media, political parties?” he replied. -0—
