Azerbaijan supports efforts to eliminate stockpiles of chemical weapons in Syria
Baku/18.09.13/Turan : Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry issued a statement condemning the use and application of all forms of chemical weapons in Syria.
In the evening of September 17 the Foreign Ministry expressed gratitude to the UN mission which investigated the use of chemical weapons in Syria, " in a complex political environment and insecurity , as well as professionalism ."
Azerbaijan , as further described in the Foreign Ministry statement, supports the agreement between the U.S. and Russia on the organization of the elimination of chemical weapons in Syria.
Azerbaijan, in turn, for a political solution to the Syrian crisis is willing to work together with all stakeholders in the UN, including the UN Security Council .
It is expected that in the near future , the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons will consider special procedures for the destruction of chemical weapons in Syria and the establishment of the regime of strict control over that.
Azerbaijan recognizes the UN Security Council as an entity responsible for the maintenance of peace and security in the world, and considers it necessary to execute its decisions and resolutions, the statement concluded . -06D -

On January 13, the trial in the case of public activist Nijat Ibrahim continued in the Baku Serious Crimes Court under the chairmanship of Judge Aygun Gurbanova. The trial was suspended after Ibrahim, in protest against the illegal arrest, began banging his head against the "aquarium cage", trying to commit suicide. The International Committee of Concerned Scholars (ICS) has appealed to the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, requesting his assistance in securing the release of the arrested researcher, Igbal Abilov. The ICS expressed concern that Abilov's arrest "may be related to his research on ethnic minorities in Azerbaijan, conducted in collaboration with scholars from Armenia."
