Mentioning Islam Karimov�s Name on Air Banned in Uzbekistan
Baku / 24.08.18 / Turan: In Uzbekistan, employees of TV channels have been banned from mentioning the name of the first President of the country Islam Karimov, who died in 2016, on the air. This is reported by Radio Liberty.
The editors of TV channels are ordered to "less mention" the name of Karimov and talk more about the current President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyayev.
According to journalists, the ban has been also introduced on the display of photographs of and monuments to the first President. "The management told us that if Karimov"s name sounded on the air, we would be severely punished," the leader of one of the TV channels said.
Earlier it became known that Karimov's portraits and books were being destroyed in Uzbekistan. On August 20, raids were conducted against souvenir merchants. Those who were selling magnets and calendars depicting the first President were fined, and the goods were confiscated. -02D-
