Nikol Pashinyan on Possible Concessions on Karabakh Conflict and on Russia's Position
Yerevan / 07/20/18 / Turan: "When talking about mutual concessions, it is implied that both sides are ready to make concessions. Why should we discuss our readiness to make concessions, if it is obvious that Azerbaijan is not ready for this?" Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan told a news conference in Yerevan on July 20.
"We make a methodical mistake when any member of the government is asked whether the principle of "territory in exchange for status" is acceptable for him. When we receive a message that Azerbaijan is ready for mutual concessions, we will discuss, not only at the level of the government, but all the people, what are the limits of concessions for us.
I can say one thing: I rule out such a solution to the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh, which will not be acceptable to our people. In Armenia, there cannot be a government that can make such a decision," Pashinyan said.
Touching upon Karabakh's participation in the negotiations, he said the issue cannot be resolved without the participation of the residents of Karabakh.
At the same time, he made a reservation that he is ready to negotiate with the Azerbaijani President, "and we have something to negotiate," he added.
Negotiations are in themselves useful, as it is necessary to create a certain atmosphere of trust for solving the issue. A corresponding atmosphere is needed to resolve the problem, he added.
In these statements, Yerevan's willingness to discuss the issue of the liberation of the occupied territories in exchange for the status of Karabakh is indirectly seen.
Touching upon the probability of a new war, Pashinyan expressed the opinion that Russia will not allow Azerbaijan to do this.
"Russia as a superpower has the ability not to allow war in our region. And I do not want to believe that Armenia's strategic ally does not use its leverage. I cannot believe that Russia will allow us to start a war and will not use its leverage to deter Azerbaijan," Pashinyan said. -02D-
