The appeal to the European Parliament to send observers to the elections in Azerbaijan
Co-Chair of the Permanent Committee of the Civil Society Forum of the EU "Eastern Partnership", Christoph Bobinski, appealed to the leaders of political factions of the European Parliament (EP) calling to send the EP Monitoring group to the presidential elections in Azerbaijan, Turan was told by Anar Mammadov, a member of the Civil Society Forum of the "Eastern Partnership".
In the appeal Bobinski noted an important role of international observers in the prevention of irregularities in the election. On the other hand, the EP’s Monitoring Group would be a support for domestic observers in Azerbaijan.
Earlier, on July 13 Group of the EP to support democracy and coordination of elections excluded from the agenda the issue on monitoring the elections in Azerbaijan. However, the final decision on this matter will be taken on September 5, at the Presidential Conference of the EP.
Bobinski noted that the decision not to send observers to the EP angered civil society in Azerbaijan. At the same time, it was welcomed by the authorities, who interpreted it as “there is no need to monitor the elections in view of democratic progress in Azerbaijan.”.—06D-
