J. Hasanli: National Council to Expose Election Fraud

The Chairman of the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF) Jamil Hasanli does not intend to run for the candidacy in the upcoming November parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan.

At the same time, NCDF intends to promote all possible means to expose fraud. This Hasanli said in an interview with Turan IA and the radio station Voice of America.

Explaining the reasons for refusal to participate in elections, Hasanli said: "I was the deputy of Milli Majlis of the 2nd and 3rd convocation. To be represented in the highest legislative body is a big job. In this sense, I did what I could. Secondly, in 2013 I was a candidate for President of Azerbaijan. Being a prime candidate, I created an alternative representative government and most of the people who participated in the election voted for me," said Hasanli.

"Our struggle goes beyond a single electoral district. Therefore, applying for participation in the parliamentary elections is inappropriate for the former presidential candidate," said Hasanli.

With regard to the participation of the National Council in the elections, a decision on this matter will be taken in the coming days.

"I want my own decision not to affect the decision of the National Council. If the National Council decides to participate in the elections, as a union, I am pleased to lead its campaign," said Hasanli.

The attitude of the National Council to the election is based on three fundamental approaches: electoral reform; release of political prisoners; ensure the monitoring of elections by the ODIHR. "Today, none of these issues is resolved," he said.

"Today the conditions for the election are harder than they were 5-10 years ago. Previously, there were 4 months to prepare for elections. Sixty days were assigned to an active campaign. Today this period is narrowed to 3 weeks. Now the elections are formal," continued Hasanli.

In his opinion, the control over the election process is completely in the hands of the authorities and they are not interested in the active participation of the people in this process.

"In the autumn we will hold mass actions. It is clear and it is associated not only with the elections. Even if the National Council does not go to the polls, it still will not take a contemplative stance. If the elections are not free, fair or democratic, the National Council will by all means expose falsifications," summed Hasanli. -06D-
