Court of Appeal leaves activist in custody

Baku / 13.03.20 / Turan: On March 13, the Baku Court of Appeal (BCA) rejected the complaint about the arrest of activist Fuad Ismayilov.

As a member with an advisory vote of the precinct election commission in the 32nd Surakhani third constituency, Fuad Ismayilov posted a video of the violations during the February 9 vote. At the same time, police officers removed him from the site with violence.

After the election, he wrote on the wall of the building opposite the CEC “Fu, Mazi!”, Thus expressing a protest against the head of the CEC for refusing to consider complaints of fraud during the election. On March 7, Ismayilov was administratively arrested for two months on charges of drug use.

The Court of Appeal dismissed the complaint, said his lawyer, Javad Javadov. According to the lawyer, Ismayilov denies the allegations and has been on a hunger strike for six days. During his arrest, he was tortured in a narcological dispensary and in the Binagadi detention center. The defense intends to file a complaint of torture with the prosecutor.

Former deputy candidate Fikret Jafarli, whose representative was Ismayilov in the election commission, appealed to the Ombudsman and international organizations on the fact of his arrest and torture. So, Ismayilov’s knee was broken, and during detention he had blood from his ears.

“He is not allowed to meet with a lawyer and family members. In protest, he has been on a hunger strike for six days,” Jafarli said.

Official structures do not comment on reports of the arrest and torture of Ismayilov.-03D06-
