Gobustan prisoner on hunger strike

Baku/05.03.20/Turan: Vugar Aliyev, who is serving a life sentence in Gobustan prison, has been on a hunger strike since March 2, with his mouth sewn up. Convicted in this way protest against the harsh sentence imposed on him. This was reported by his parents.

Aliyev was prosecuted in a high-profile case 17 years ago in the murder of the son of the head of the Executive Power, Shamkir Aslan Aslanov.

This murder was allegedly committed on the grounds of honor. Then Lamiya Guliyeva, the beloved of Aliyev,  was attracted.

Aliyev was sentenced to life imprisonment, and Lamia - to 10 years in prison. However, in 2015, she was prematurely released due to pregnancy.

Aliyev’s parents believe that their son was convicted too harshly, because under Article 120.1 (intentional murder), according to which he was found guilty; no one in Azerbaijan was sentenced for life. Such punishment shall be imposed in the event of the killing of two or more persons.

Parents believe that the father of the victim put pressure on the investigation, using the position of a government official.

The convict requires a review of his case and commutation of punishment. His parents in their video message also ask the President of Azerbaijan to assist in the review of the case and release in connection with the serving of 17 years of punishment, or pardon. –06D-
