Human rights activists call on to release Leyla Yunus

Novella Jafaroglu , the head of the Society to Protect Women Rights, condemned the pressure on her colleague Leyla Yunus in Baku prison N 1.

In an interview with Turan, she said that a few days ago with  her colleague Mirvari Gahramanli she  met with the first Deputy Prosecutor General Rustam Usubov, and asked to change the measure of restraint Leila Yunus on house arrest. Jafaroglu together with other members of the Monitoring Group of human rights organizations met with the Ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova, and also asked to facilitate the transference of  Yunus to another cell. Human rights activists drew attention to unbearable conditions  in which Yunus is kept  together with criminals. They also pointed to the need to place Yunus  in  hospital if necessary.

In addition, human rights activists asked to send  to Yunus  the representatives to the national preventive group at the Ombudsman.

Suleymanova, on her part,  promised to send a request  of the defenders to the Minister of Justice Fikret Mammadov.

On September 24-25, human rights activists are going to hold an international conference on human rights with the participation of representatives of the parliament, the executive and foreign experts.

At this conference, human rights activists intend to appeal to President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva with an appeal on the occasion of Qurban Bayram (October 4-5) to issue an act of pardon, and release from detention of all political prisoners, including Leila Yunus.- C06--
