Ministry of Finance begins large-scale inspection in Salyan

Ministry of Finance has started a large-scale audit of the use of public funds in Salyan region.  The audit has begun this week and will last 40 days, according to informed sources.  Turan failed to get comments  in the  executive power  of the region and the Finance Ministry.

In particular, the financial activities of the   regional authorities  and budget organizations  over  the past three years  is to be checked, that is, the  period of the leadership of the current head of Salyan region,  Tahir Kerimov.

The head of local NGO "Promoting Democracy" Emil Mammadov wrote  in his open letter to the President of state on corruption in the region, non transparent tenders, embezzlement of budget funds in the past year. After that,  the regional authorities started to exert pressure  on him, and in April he was arrested on concocted charges of extortion. The same  regional  officials about  whom Mammadov wrote in his letter  testified against him.  Trial in the case of Mammadov  will begin on  July 31 in Lankaran Serious Crimes Court.

*  The NGO "Promoting Democracy" works actively  in the southern region. Its head Mammadov repeatedly reported  about ​​corruption  in the region, and defended the rights of local residents.

This NGO was involved in several projects  of the civilian control network in mining industry. All this caused severe irritation by the local authorities, who launched a campaign  against Mammadov accusing  him of anti-state  activity.—06B—
