PFPA Activist Trial Begins

Baku / 06.03.20 / Turan: The Narimanov District Court of Baku, chaired by Vusal Gurbanov, held a preparatory meeting in the case against the chairman of the Nizami district department of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) Pasha Umudov.

The hearing is essentially scheduled for March 16.

Umudov was arrested on October 16, three days before the rally of the National Council of Democratic Forces. He was charged under Article 234.2 (illegal acquisition and possession of drugs for the purpose of sales) of the Criminal Code. If found guilty, he faces imprisonment of up to 7 years.

During the meeting, the lawyer Zibeyda Sadigova drew attention to the fact that Umudov had already undergone administrative arrest before October 16. Then he was warned that if he did not stop his political activity, then the next time he would be charged with a criminal charge.

The lawyer also indicated that Umudov himself and his spouse have health problems. Despite 8 petitions of the defense, the preventive measure was not replaced by him.

He confessed under pressure.

“According to Pasha Umudov, in the main department for combating organized crime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs he was subjected to degrading treatment. He was forced to stand facing the wall for hours, threatened with a baseball bat.

His confession was recorded on video 7 times, demanding to emphasize that he is the driver of the Popular Front Party leader Ali Karimli. These confessions were knocked out by the department, which in international reports is called the “nest of fear," said the lawyer.

Umudov himself denied the allegations and stated that he was being persecuted for his political activities and work as a driver of Karimli. Human rights activists recognized Umudov as a political prisoner. —06D-
