Baku/09.08.19/Turan: The state prosecutor proposed to mitigate the punishment of another group of convicts in the "Ganja case" of 8 people.
At the trial in the court of appeal on August 8, the prosecutor Jeyhun Aliyev proposed re-qualifying the charge of 7 convicts from Article 220.1 (participation in the riots) to Art. 29, 220.1 (attempt to participate in the riots). Only in relation to the teacher of Sumgayit State University Elman Huseynov, the state prosecutor suggested leaving the article unchanged. Nevertheless, the prosecutor asked the court to reduce the sentence of Guliyev from 8 to 7 years in prison. For the rest, the prosecutor also proposed reducing the sentence of convicts by 6 years to six months: Sabuhi Rajabov, Riyad Nuruzade, Sabir Azizov and Fikret Mirzaliev. Sentenced to 5 years: Jabir Azizov and Gulmirze Nuruzade reduce the sentence to 4.5 years in prison. However, the lawyers did not agree with the prosecutor. In their view, the defendants did not commit any criminal acts at all. The defense requested for all an acquittal. Azizov"s lawyer asked the court to take into account the plight of the accused"s family.
"Sabir Azizov is called a member of a radical religious group. Although during the detention, he was intoxicated. His father is an invalid of the first group, his mother is a cleaner - she receives only 180 manat. The family earned two sons and both were arrested. At least for the sake of humanity, release one to support the family," the lawyer said. The defense insisted that the head of state was incorrectly informed about the events in Ganja. Those arrested in the case are tortured and tortured, demanding that they confess to organizing unrest. The trial will continue on August 23, when the defendants speak in their final words. Earlier the prosecutor proposed to mitigate the punishment of two groups of convicts of the Ganja events with a total of 18 people.
* On July 3, 2018 in Ganja an attempt was made on the then head of the city Elmar Veliyev. Ganja native Yunis Safarov wounded Veliyev and his bodyguard on the head. After that, a protest rally in front of the Ganja administration building against Veliyev was scheduled for July 10 on social networks. On the same day, the MJD reported riots in Ganja, during which two police officers were killed. Following this, mass arrests were carried out among believers and others. At a meeting in this department, Attorney General Zakir Garalov announced on July 31, 2019 that 29 members of an organized criminal group were brought to justice in connection with the attempt on E. Veliyev, and another 11 people were put on the international wanted list. On the events of July 10, the investigation was completed and eight lawsuits against 60 people were sent to the courts.
