Duration of Arrest of Youth Activist Ilkin Rustamzadeh Extended to November 17
Nasimi District Court of Baku on September 11 extended by two months the arrest of the activist of the civil movement Free Youth Ilkin Rustamzadeh.
He was arrested May 17 in connection with the organization of a flash mob Harlem Shake on the Seaside Boulevard, which was seen by the authorities as hooliganism.
As the lawyer for Rustamzadeh Nemat Karimli said, the investigation did not result in strong arguments in favor of the need for continued detention of the accused in custody.
Rustamzadeh himself said about the political motives of his arrest. He believes that he is being persecuted to punish for the criticism in the social networks on the Internet.
In addition, Rustamzadeh reported that the day before he was imprisoned in solitary confinement, where he was beaten.
In connection with this an appeal will be made to the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the decision of the court to extend the period of detention up to 17 November will be appealed.
Rustamzadeh has been recognized a «prisoner of conscience» by Amnesty International. -06D -
