The unexpected resignation of Prime Minister of Turkey
Prime Minister of Turkey Ahmet Davutoglu said that soon will leave the post of head of government and leader of the ruling Justice and Development Party. He said he would not run for the post of party leader at an extraordinary congress on May 22, and resign from the post of prime minister.
At a press conference at the headquarters of the party on Thursday, Davutoglu said that he decided to resign after consultations with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. According to Davutoglu, a change of leadership "must be carried out in a peaceful way, to preserve the unity of the party." At the same time, Davutoglu said that the decision on resignation of "was not a choice, but a necessity" decision. However, he hopes to continue cooperation with President Erdogan.
"I have no sense of failure, no regrets about this decision," Hurriyet Daily News quotes the prime minister.
Meeting with Erdogan mentioned by Davutoglu, took place yesterday, May 4, and lasted nearly two hours. "The president and prime minister reached an agreement on the Congress I do not think that Davutoglu will again be a candidate," a source in the ruling party told Reuters.
Erdogan and Davutoglu met after for a few weeks on several occasions they publicly demonstrated the tensions in relations. Davutoglu became prime minister of Turkey in 2014. Who will be his successor is not reported.
According to unconfirmed reports, the cause of the differences between Erdogan and Davutoglu were the relations between the EU and Turkey. According to some reports, Davutoglu did not share Erdogan's tough stance towards Brussels. -02D-
