Thomas Melia Plans to Visit Ilgar Mamedov in Jail
Baku/30.08.13/Turan : Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Thomas Melia during the upcoming early September visit to Azerbaijan is going to meet with the imprisoned leader of the REAL Movement Ilgar Mamedov.
He has already applied with the appropriate appeal to the Azerbaijani authorities to grant him such a possibility, an informed source told Turan.
In his previous visit in April this year Melia was not granted such authorization. However, he visited the office of REAL, where he met with members of the Mamedov family and the executive secretary of RAL Natig Jafarli.
Mamedov was arrested Feb. 4 in connection with the unrest in the Ismayilli district on January 23-24. He is accused of organizing mass disorder and resisting the detention.
The human rights organization Amnesty International declared him a "prisoner of conscience".
Mamedov is running for President of Azerbaijan in the presidential election on October 9. -03B06 -
