Namazov: Azerbaijan Should Have Acted within Legal Framework
The extradition of Ramil Safarov to Azerbaijan is the right step, said in an interview with Objective TV (www.Obyektiv.tv) the head of the public forum For Azerbaijan Eldar Namazov.
In his view, the Hungarian court, sentencing the murderer to life in prison, did not consider a number of important facts and circumstances. "The court should have taken into account that Safarov is a displaced person, and his relatives and friends were killed in the Armenian aggression. The court should have also taken into account that the Armenian officer provoked the Azerbaijani officer and he acted in an extreme condition. For these reasons, the court had to make a lighter sentence," said Namazov.
After extradition Safarov became a subject of the local legal system and the Azerbaijani court had to consider his case and endure a fair decision.
"Given the fact that Safarov spent 8.5 years in prison, his release during the trial was inevitable. However, the authorities of Azerbaijan made a clearly political move. I think they should have acted in the legal field," said Namazov.
The Armenian side took advantage of the situation and launched a campaign against Azerbaijan in Europe and America, and several states have demanded an explanation from Azerbaijan.
"The Hungarian Government issued a letter from the Deputy Minister of Justice of Azerbaijan, which states that after his extradition Safarov will serve his sentence for 25 years, and the Armenians used it," said Namazov.
Speaking about Russia's interest in the story, Namazov said that Moscow is not interested in the development of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia and the West. "The main idea of ??Russia is this: do not look for justice in the West, and hope for Russia," said Namazov.
Safarov's extradition will be an opportunity for the breakdown of negotiations on the settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict. On the other hand, the talks are at an impasse for long.
"If the negotiations were a success, then we could talk about the negative impact of the release of Safarov on the peace process. Even international experts openly acknowledge that the OSCE Minsk Group has faced a fiasco," said Namazov.-03B06-
