Another trade union activist detained
Baku/12.08.23/Turan: Aykhan Israfilov, a member of the board of the Confederation of Trade Unions of Azerbaijan under the “Democracy 1918” movement, was detained.
He was detained on August 11 by employees of the Narimanov district police department of Baku, said the head of the movement “Democracy 1918” Ahmed Mammadli.
“Today, the lawyer we brought in managed to find out that he was going to face criminal charges in connection with drugs. But so far he has not yet appeared before the court to choose a preventive measure," Mammadli said.
He believes that Israfilov's detention is of a political nature.
“Aykhan became the third trade union activist detained after the couriers' action on August 1. Head of the Confederation Afiyaddin Mammadov was arrested for 30 days on an administrative case. Elvin Mustafayev has already been charged with a criminal case due to drug trafficking and arrested for 4 months during the investigation.
And now Aykhan Israfilov was detained. In addition, a case has been initiated against activist Orkhan Zeynalov for allegedly not repaying a bank loan. This story is many years old and the bank had no claims against him, but law enforcement officers demanded that Zeynalov repay the debt. While he remains at large,” Mammadli said.
The Interior Ministry confirmed Israfilov's detention, noting that “an investigation is underway, information will be provided to the public.” -06B-

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
