Media Review October 28, 2019

Diversification of the economy, why manat does not switch to a floating course, and adding the computer science subject to entrance exams is the topic of today's media.

The newspaper Azerbaijan writes about the need for more accelerated diversification of the economy. The author quotes a speech by President Ilham Aliyev that growth in the non-oil industry amounted to more than 15%. On a global scale, this can be considered a record. Of particular importance is the development of the agrarian region, where growth over 9 months amounted to more than 7%. The development of automotive infrastructure and the construction of thousands of kilometers of roads also serves to diversify the economy, the author notes.

The website Modern.az gives the opinion of experts about the need to add computer science to the entrance exams. In the global education system, technological education means serious development. However, in Azerbaijani schools, computer science is not taken seriously. Children living in the age of technological development must seriously change their attitude towards it. Experts believe that a weak study of computer science comes from the fact that this subject is not included in entrance exams.

The website Redaktor.az discusses the reasons why the manat does not switch to a floating rate. The statement by the head of the Central Bank Elman Rustamov about the impossibility of doing this is commented by expert Parviz Heydarov. He believes that a full transition of the manat to a floating rate is possible if the state completely abandons control over the economy.

The expert believes that state capitalism reigns in the country. The scanty part of the population is engaged in profitable activities. Most of it depends on salaries and pensions, so the state is forced to provide this part of the population, and also does not release the manat. The population does not actively buy dollars because it is not involved in production. In this context, there is no need to talk about a floating rate.
