Press Review 03/31/2016

Official newspapers write the increased prestige of Azerbaijan.

The non-governmental press writes about the continuing job cuts, deteriorating financial situation of the country, about the detention of Akram Aylisli and Ilham Aliyev's visit to the United States.

The Azadlig writes about the expected staff reductions in mass in the country in connection with the structural changes in the government. In particular, district offices of the Culture and Tourism Ministry, the Ministry of Education, as well as the Prosecutor General's Office will b e closed. Instead, regional offices will be created. As a result, the number of lost jobs will be considerable.

The paper describes in detail the 11-hour detention of the famous writer Akram Aylisli in the Baku airport.

The Novoye Vremya writes that Azerbaijan is headed for a strong relationship with the United States. The newspaper believes that the trip of the President to Washington D.C. to attend the nuclear summit means warming relations between the two countries. Normalization of the relations between the countries is also proved by the presidential decree of pardon, in which 14 political prisoners were released.

The approximation of the relations is also proved by greater cooperation between Azerbaijan and NATO and the US and the UK role in financing projects of Southern Gas Corridor, TAP and TANAP.

The author also criticizes the US attitude to the issue of democracy in Azerbaijan.

The Bizim Yol publishes an interview with MP Ali Masimli who does not believe in the likelihood of cheap credits for Azerbaijan.

He calls correct the financing of the project Southern Gas Corridor by placing state guaranteed bonds in the global financial market. The deputy considers acceptable the use of funds of the State Oil Fund, as well as certain loans, for this.

He also points out that Azerbaijan is not yet fully switched to a floating rate of the manat. According to the MP, this process should be supported by non-oil products and currency in the amount of 10 billion USD.

The Yeni Musavat writes that the authorities are moving to a new way of governance. There is already an agreement in principle about the opening of offices of democratic institutions of the West, which were recently closed, in Baku.

Most of them were American organizations whose accounts were arrested.

The question of providing the opposition certain airtime is discussed. This entitles the paper to say that the country starts a new format of management.  –0--
