Prosecutor General Signs His Own Incompetence
The Prosecutor General Zakir Garalov is "troubled" with the too severe sentence on the known human rights defender Intigam Aliyev. In this connection, the Prosecutor filed a cassation appeal to the Supreme Court.
This sensational information came today from Javad Javadov, the lawyer for Intigam Aliyev. According to the lawyer on his Facebook page, the cassation appeal will be considered on March 28.
Recall that Aliyev was accused of tax evasion, abuse of power, misappropriation and illegal business and sentenced to 7.5 years in prison. The appeals were rejected.
Note that during the trial, the public prosecutor Farid Nagiyev demanded to condemn Intigam Aliyev to 10 years in prison, and on appeal he insisted on upholding the first instance verdict.
Now the Prosecutor General declared that the sentence is too harsh and it is necessary to soften it.
This theater of absurd is the legal system of Azerbaijan.
The reason for this performance is the forthcoming visit of Ilham Aliyev to the United States, where they will demand an explanation for the crackdown on civil society. According to diplomatic sources, none of the US administration will meet with Aliyev if he does not let all the political prisoners go, including Intigam Aliyev, Ilgar Mammadov and Khadija Ismayilova.
In addition, the bill Act on Azerbaijani Democracy will be initiated, which provides for sanctions against the government of Azerbaijan. -02 / 05B-

Amid the bustling scenes of this year’s COP29 climate conference, a protest against whaling and deep-sea mining, organized by a group calling itself the FINS Initiative, drew significant attention from delegates and observers. In the last two days, a "news" story appeared on TikTok about a whale spotted on Baku's seaside boulevard. The most "observant" users posted videos, commenting on the size of the animal. Later, other "witnesses" claimed it wasn't a whale, but a shark. Even later, a version emerged suggesting it was a submarine.
