Eight defenders of hijab are convicted
Today Nariman District Court of Baku, chaired by Abbas Aliyev, convicted of believers charged with resisting the police and public order offenses. They were arrested due to the protest action on October 5, 2012 outside the Ministry of Education, where several hundred Islamists demanded to abolish the ban on headscarves in schools.
The court found eight people guilty and sentenced: Dawud Kerimov, Telman Shiraliev to six years in prison, Tarlan Agadadashev, Anara Gasymly, Ilham Hatamov and Rovsan Allakhverdiev – to 5.5 years of imprisonment, Murad Guliyev and Ceyhun Guliyev – to 5 years.
According to the lawyer Mansum Bayramov, most of the defendants have not pleaded guilty. Some of them partially admitted guilt. Lawyers and relatives said the sentence was ordered, and they intend in the coming days to hold a press conference.
On these events 33 have been arrested. Some of them also appeared in court, others are still under investigation.—16D06—
