Former head of the Ministry for Foreign Economic Relations (MFER) Nijat Guliyev is arrested

Former head of  the Ministry for  Foreign Economic  Relations  (MFER) Nijat Guliyev  has been arrested on August 8 by the employees of the Ministry of National Security (MNS)  in his dacha. Yesterday the Absheron district court passed a measure of restraint for a period of  two months. He is charged with illegal possession of weapons.

 
The  lawyer Elton Guliyev  confirmed the information about the arrest of  Guliyev. However, he refrained from further comment. Currently, the lawyer is writing an appeal against the arrest, and  later will make comments. According to some media reports, guns and grenades, and machine gun  were found at Guliyev’s dacha. 
 
 The MNS and the General Prosecutor's Office  did not commnet immediate comment on the reports of the arrest  of Guliyev.
 
Guliyev was  the head of MFER 1993-95. Later he went to Adjara, where he was counselor  of the  president, Aslan Abashidze, until his resignation in 2004. Then  he returned to Azerbaijan and was doing business in Azerbaijan and Turkey.
 
Guliyev  was not involved in  any political, social or other public activities.
 
In October 2005, Guliyev, was arrested along with a group of high-ranking officials on charges of attempting  th coup.  However, two weeks later, he was released, and was not brought to justice. –06D--
