Nigar Yagublu Softened Form of Punishment

On Saturday, from Baku prison was freed and taken home an activist of the youth organization of the opposition party Musavat Nigar Yagublu.

Recall that she was arrested September 10, 2012 on charges of accident on August 25, which killed a member of the Assembly of the party Musavat Aydin Adzhalov.

On December 19 the Absheron Court sentenced the girl to 2.5 years of imprisonment to be served in a penal colony. On February 26 the Court of Appeal upheld that decision in force.

As explained in an interview with Turan the girl’s lawyer Nemat Kerimli, after the decision of the Court of Appeal the judgment came into force, and to serve the sentence, it was decided to transfer the activist to the settlement colony in Lokbatan.

However, the law allows the convicted to stay for 12 hours per day outside the colony in the settlement, where he is, added the lawyer.

Since Yagublu lives in Baku, while serving her sentence, she will be free 12 hours per day.

However, the defense intends to file an appeal to the Supreme Court and to achieve the full release of Yagublu from the punishment.

According to the conviction of the democratic community of Azerbaijan, the government used the traffic accident to punish the activist for political reasons. They considered the pre-trial arrest of the girl and her punishment as prosecution of the girl for her opposition activities. Yagublu’s father, the deputy head of the party Musavat Tofig Yagublu was also persecuted legally for this.

Recall that on February 4 Tofig Yagublu was arrested in connection with the Ismayilli events of January 23-24. -06B-
