U.S. Requests Consular Access To Jailed RFE/RL Journalist 'As Soon As Possible'
Washington D.C./24.10.23/Turan: The United States said on Monday that it has requested through Embassy channels formal consular access to jailed Russian-American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva, who has been detained in Kazan, TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.
Kurmasheva, an editor with RFE/RL Tatar-Bashkir Service, has been charged with failure to register as a foreign agent. On Monday, a Russian court extended her detention till December 5.
"We obviously want to see consular access granted as soon as possible," State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told TURAN's correspondent during a daily briefing.
The Kremlin is yet to provide information about Kurmasheva's detention. Washington is 'deeply concerned' about her detention, Miller said.
