Court of Appeal left Ahsan Nuruzade in custody
Baku / 08.08.18 / Turan: The Baku Court of Appeal upheld the verdict to Ahsan Nuruzade, the coordinator of the Movement "Muslim Unity", about his imprisonment for 7 years on charges of illicit drug trafficking on a large scale. In the course of the trial session, under the chairmanship of Mirpashi Huseynov, lawyer Fariz Namazli stated his client's innocence.
He pointed to the facts of violation of the law during the detention and arrest of Nuruzade,
Nuruzade was detained near the park of Samad Vurgun, when he left the taxi and was immediately handcuffed. He was brought to the Main Department for Combating Organized Crime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. All this time he was under police surveillance and presumably, there drugs were planted in his pocket.
Namazli recalled that Nuruzade was engaged in active social activities, published in social networks information about the arrests and trials of religious activists, including the leader of the movement "Muslim Unity" Taleh Bagirzade.
It is because of this activity that he was previously detained twice on the submission of which he was subjected to administrative arrest.
Then he was warned that if he would not give up his social activities, he would be sentenced for a long term of imprisonment. The lawyer asked to justify Nuruzade.
Nuruzade supported what the lawyer said, but the prosecutor proposed to reject the complaint.
The court after a short meeting decided not to satisfy the complaint.
Namazli's lawyer told Turan that the defense will be appealed.
Nuruzade was arrested on charges of drug trafficking on October 6, 2017. He was charged under Article 234.4.3. (illegal drug trafficking in a large amount) of the Criminal Code, which provides for punishment from 5 to 12 years of imprisonment. On March 6, he was sentenced to 7 years in prison.
Nuruzade was involved in the coordination of legal and public protection of religious activists arrested in connection with the Nardaran events of 2015. He is recognized by local human rights activists as a political prisoner. -06B--
