Representative of Salafi Community in Sumgait Arrested for Two Months
The religious activist of the Salafi community Zohrab Shikhaliyev detained in Jorat has been arrested for two months. Turan was told by his brother Samir Shikhaliyev. According to him, Zohrab is accused of illegal possession of weapons.
Z. Shikhaliyev is contained in the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime of MIA. He was arrested and taken to the police of Sumgait. There he was appointed a state attorney, who however did not arrive at the trial in Baku, citing the fact that the believer would be appointed another lawyer in the capital.
S. Shikhaliyev said that another lawyer was brought for the protection of the rights of his brother and he intends to start work the next day.
S. Shikhaliyev said his brother was arrested on trumped-up charges and weapons were planted on him by law enforcement officials, who rushed there in disguise.
S. Shikhaliyev perplexed about his brother's arrest and the detention of 9 more believers, who later were released, after being exposed to abuse and humiliation.
S. Shihaliyev said his brother always supported statehood and the policy of President Ilham Aliyev and rejected religious radicalism and violence. He opened a chapel in his yard, because of the fact that in Sumgait there is no Sunni mosque.
"Zohrab opened the chapel for believers to perform namaz. This is no mystery. All knew about it, including the law enforcement agencies and the Executive Power of Sumgait," said S. Shikhaliyev.
Earlier, the imam of the Salafi mosque Abu Bakr closed by the authorities, Gamet Suleymanov also said that Z. Shikhaliyev is not a radical.
Recall that the police accused Shikhaliyev of illegal construction of the mosque and possession of weapons, ammunition and banned literature. -06B-

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
