Baku / 05.06.18 / Turan: The appeal of blogger Mehman Huseynov, who was sentenced to 2 years of imprisonment, appointed to the Supreme Court today, did not take place, as the Penitentiary Service did not bring him to the trial.

The presiding judge of the Supreme Court, Imran Hajigayibov, said at the beginning of the meeting that he had sent a letter to the Penitentiary Service, so that Huseynov could be brought to court. However, for unknown reasons, this was not done.

In his turn, the lawyer Fuad Agayev said that several days ago Huseynov was transferred from the jail to the pre-trial detention center, also for unknown reasons. Musa Musayev, the private prosecutor, the head of the Nasimi district police department, or his representative, did not appear at the meeting either. The defense insists on their participation in the process.

In connection with the absence of Huseynov, the judge decided to postpone the proceedings to 16:00 on 25 June.

The case Huseynov has been considered in the Supreme Court by the second circle. For the first time, the Supreme Court returned the case to the Baku Court of Appeal for a second judicial investigation. However, the appellate instance, in fact, did not conduct an investigation and in October last year upheld the verdict.

The reason for the arrest of the blogger was his allegations of torture in the police in January 2017, where he was taken after being kidnapped in the center of Baku. In response, the head of the Nasimi police department Musa Musayev filed a libel suit. The Surakhani District Court sentenced Huseynov to two years of imprisonment on March 3, finding him guilty of libel in committing a serious crime (Article 147.2 of the Criminal Code). -03C--
