Municipal elections are held in an atmosphere of pressure on opposition candidates

The campaign for municipal elections has entered its final stage. On  30 November  began  the phase of election campaign, but the representatives of various political forces ascertain the absence of public interest in the election campaign. This is due to the weakness of one side of the municipal system, and on the other hand, the campaign does not cause interest due to full control over the electoral process, lack of free and fair elections.

For example, "Musavat" party refused to participate in the elections as a political organization. At the same time, ordinary party members can take part in them. However, the "Musavat" intends to monitor the elections at least  on 600-700 polling stations, told  deputy head of "Musavat" Elman Fatah.

According to him, 20-30 party members  put forward their candidatures at their own initiative. In this case, six members of the party was denied approval and registration of candidates.

The reason for the lack of interest in the elections is that the local authorities specifically spread information about the predetermination of the elections in favor of the authorities. In addition, there is pressure on voters lean toward opposition candidates. For example, in the village of  Gizilagaj  of Masalli region  a pressure was put on  voters to recall signatures given in favor of the opposition.

Similar problems faced members of the party "Classic" Popular Front. According to the party leader Mirmahmud Fattayev,  the authorities prevent the nomination of candidates from the opposition. In the district election commissions  they are not given the application forms, claiming to provide "help" that they agreed policy of the authorities. The approved candidates  were rejected  registration on trumped-up reasons.

Deputy chairman of the "Umid" party,  Enver Aghazadeh, said that this political organization pushed around 4000 candidates. However, under various pretexts, they were denied, said Aghazadeh.

As a result, from the  "Umid" party there were about 200 candidates,  and they are subject to pressure, so they withdrew their candidacies, said Aghazadeh.

Previously, the Elections Monitoring and Democracy Studies Center  stated  the absence of  conditions for democratic elections due to the suppression of political freedoms, arrests of activists, the obstacles to the activities of NGOs, including those working in the field of monitoring of elections.—06B—
