To save people from superstition, they must be given freedom - Zardusht Alizade
Baku/14.06.19/Turan: In recent days, a video about the mass pilgrimage of residents of Goranboy to a certain "sanctuary" has become popular on social networks, where they are allegedly healed through kissing shoes.
What is the reason for the belief of modern people in such superstitions and how to deal with it? Orientalist Zardusht Alizade answered the questions of the Azerbaijani service of Voice of America.
"There is only one reason. Citizens have a low level of literacy. Because our education system is constantly degrading. For this reason, people become superstitious. Living in difficult conditions, with poor health care and low material incomes, people will be ready to believe in anything to get out of this state," Alizade said.
The authorities claim that all freedoms exist in the country and that the standard of living and education is constantly improving. However, in reality the situation is different. The authorities do not want citizens to be free and independent. Their task is to keep people in their current state, so that they believe in superstition when they are easily controlled, Alizade said.
What is the way out of this situation? Answering this question, Alizade said that superstition is fueled by ignorance. This problem was acute as early as the 19th century, when prosfer Jalil Mammadguluzadeh urged the public to fight the sovereigns.
In fact, superstitions are far from religion. The predisposition of people to superstition is an indicator not only of illiteracy, but also of disbelief in the real institutions of the state.
These are also connected with the national mentality. So, at all times condemning and opposing superstition were negatively perceived by the majority. So it was not only during the tsars, but also in Soviet times. At that time, critics of the Soviet government were considered not of this world or anti-Soviet. And now, dissatisfied with the state system, its critics are announced, at best, not of this world.
The state does not have an adequate strategy in this matter, and the funds allocated for religious education are spent on formal measures or plundered. Hence the result. That is why belief in superstition does not weaken, Zardusht Alizade concluded. -03B-
