Festival of European Cinema Opens in Baku
The European Film Festival opens in the Park Cinema in Baku with the show tape by the Lithuanian director Algimantas Puypa Castle of Sleeping Butterflies.
The main heroine of the Lithuanian picture is a middle-aged woman named Monica (Ioannina Lapinskayte). Its secured and prosperous life goes on, until she and her husband accidentally hit with their car a prostitute, who then commits suicide in hospital. Feeling guilty, Monica goes to social refuge with a proposal to host three girls deported from Germany for prostitution in her country house. Communicating with these girls changed the attitude of Monica.
The author of the script of the film is the director himself.
Speaking at a press conference before the film, Puypa said: "We wanted to show a woman's world. Today, women's issues and the role of women in society greatly increased. The stories told in the film are real."
The Baku premiere was attended by ambassadors of European countries, filmmakers and the public of Azerbaijan.
The festival will last up to October 10 and the show will be free. The aim of the festival is the alignment of cultural relations between the EU and Azerbaijan, promoting European values, in turn, said the head of the EU mission to Azerbaijan Roland Kobia. He expressed the hope that the film will cause the Azerbaijani citizens to better know and understand the processes in the field of European cinema.

The timing of this exhibition is no coincidence, aligning with the upcoming COP29, the UN Climate Change Conference to be held in Baku from November 11 to 22.
