Family of journalist who is on a hunger strike for 227 days intends to seek asylum abroad
Baku/19.06.21/Turan: The founder and head of the Azel.Tv website, Afgan Sadigov, continues his hunger strike for 227 days in anticipation of a review of his case and restoration of justice. Afgan is in a critical state and is being fed artificially, his wife Sevinj Sadigova told Turan.
“He is given injections of strong fortifying drugs through a dropper. However, a long hunger strike causes irreversible processes in his body. All his organs fail. Afgan has serious kidney problems, his immune system is weakened, and he cannot stand. The pressure is constantly low. Because of a hunger strike, he suffers from diabetes mellitus. His lungs are 80 percent covered with a stain,” says Sevinj Sadigova.
Desperate from the futility of efforts to restore her husband's rights, a young woman is about to seek asylum abroad with her family. “I want to leave my country. On the one hand, a great injustice against my husband. On the other hand, there is not enough livelihood for my family. Therefore, in order to grant asylum to my family, I will apply to the embassies of foreign states. The attitude to Afgan is very cruel. He is dying, but no one reacts to it,” said Sevinj Sadigova.
“I have no strength left to fight, but I will continue the actions," Sadigova said.
According to her, the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan has appointed the consideration of the cassation appeal of journalist Afgan Sadigov for July 2.
* Head of Azel.TV Afgan Sadigov was arrested on charges of extortion through threats in May this year. On November 3, the court sentenced him to seven years in prison. Since November 4, he went on a hunger strike in protest, considering the sentence unfair. On January 28, the appellate court reduced the sentence to 6 years in prison.
Local human rights activists recognized him as a political prisoner. —03B06-
