The Supreme Court upheld the ban on the journalist’s leaving the country
On Thursday the Supreme Court, chaired by Ilgar Gilijev considered a cassation of the investigative journalist Khadija Ismayilova, a ban on leaving the country was discussed. However, the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal, said the journalist herself. She noted that the ban is not justified and is for the restriction her participation in international conferences, in order to prevent criticism of the Azerbaijani government for human rights violations. However, this ban is illogical, because the journalist is connected to the on-line conferences, and bring her point of view. Ismayilova called absurd the reasons for the travel ban. She said that Khadija Ismayilova is known for investigating corruption in the higher echelons of power in Azerbaijan. In 2014, she was arrested on charges of incitement to suicide attempts of Tural Mustafayev. Later, she was charged under a series of economic charges. On September 1, 2015 the court sentenced the journalist to 7.5 years in prison. On May 25 the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan replaced the real term of 3.5 years with a probation period of five years, and freed the journalist. However, she is limited in her rights, and cannot leave the country. -16B06--
