Health of the arrested editor of "Khural" deteriorates

Avaz Zeynalli, the detained editor of "Khural" newspaper,  appealed to the chief of the Baku prison with a request to transfer him to a clinic due to health problems, according to information from the Committee to protect the rights of Zeynalli.

According to the same source, Zeynalli has acute cardiac issues, headaches, breathing problems, and symptoms of diabetes. Therefore, he needs serious treatment and examination. Zeynalli also called on the Ombudswoman to visit him and to assist in providing him with adequate medical care.

Zeynalli was arrested  on October 28, 2011 on the complaint of the then deputy Gular Akhmedova (now she herself is under arrest for fraud.)

Zeynalli is charged under four Articles of the Criminal Code: 311.3.3 (large size bribery) 311.3.4 (bribery using threats), 306 (non-execution of court decisions), and 213-1 (tax evasion.)

The journalist denies the charges and said that the case was fabricated in connection with criticism of the government. The prosecutor asked the court to sentence Zeynalli to 11 years in prison. On February 28, the floor will be given to the defense. -16D06-
