Re-elected PACE President called for the release of Ilgar Mamedov
Re-elected PACE president Pedro Agramunt, addressed the deputies, and touched on the priority themes which are on the agenda of the Council of Europe. Among them he noted a number of topics related to Azerbaijan. In particular, he referred to the unresolved Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and expressed regret that PACE could not contribute to solving this problem. Speaking about the April war in 2016, he described the incident as a dangerous phenomenon, and noted that the situation can ignite at any time. On the topic of human rights, Agramunt welcomed the release from prison of many journalists and civil society activists. At the same time, he called on the Azerbaijani authorities to release opposition leader Ilgar Mamedov, who is being held in detention despite the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights. According to a report by Turan correspondent, the discussions took place behind closed doors and lasted for over an hour. No statements were made to the press following the meeting. Furthermore, conference security prevented journalists from asking questions to the meeting participants.
