Press Review - January 24, 2018

Azerbaijan's advancement in the sphere of inclusive development, the rise in prices in the country, problems in the non-oil sector, and disputes over a new spelling dictionary are the leading topics of today's press.

The newspaper Azerbaijan, with economist Vugar Bayramov, analyzes the third place occupied by Azerbaijan in the traditional index of inclusive development of the World Economic Forum.

This is the world's most famous index, relating to developed and developing countries. Seventy-seven developing countries were studied, among which Azerbaijan was.

This is the only country in the region that took the third place with 4.69 points. The indicators taken as a basis were GDP per capita, labor efficiency, life expectancy and employment.

The website Azadliqinfo.az writes that the rise in prices in the country has broken all conceivable records. The rise in prices by the government has no limits, the author writes. Over the past year, all significant food and non-food items rose.

Last night, the price of cigarettes and alcohol doubled, and the excise tax on gasoline brands 95 and 98 rose 200 times. And the government is stubbornly trying to justify its actions.

Further, the author cites the price dynamics in figures.

The newspaper Novoye Vremya writes about the state of exports. After the fall in oil prices, the government seriously began talking about the growth in exports of non-oil products. However, as soon as the price of oil jumped, this was forgotten.

In other words, there have been no significant changes in the structure of exports.

So, from the non-oil products the main place in the export is taken by agricultural products.

The website Ayna.az writes about the recent sporadic arguments around the spelling dictionary prepared by the Institute of Linguistics. It's about changing the spelling of words and about the hype around it.
