Diogo Pinto: "Azerbaijan has not yet been freed from the remnants of totalitarianism"

After 21 years of independence Civil Society in Azerbaijan could have been formed more effectively, Objective TV ws told by the Secretary General of the International European Movement (IEM), Diogo Pinto.

According to the functionary of the largest NGO in Europe, tensions over the pardon of Safarov are a good example of the difference between European and local mentality. "If this officer had killed someone in Baku, he would have been in prison, but he killed a colleague of another nationality in Europe, and the local government has done everything possible for his extradition and clemency. Europeans understand the severe effects, including mental health, of the Karabakh conflict and the fact that Safarov is a native of the region, and suffered from this historical injustice. However, if you want to be members of the European family, you cannot justify a criminal's act and make him a hero. This applies to the crime regardless of the country, and participation in international conflicts," said Pinto.

Azerbaijan, as well as two other republics of the South Caucasus, voluntarily assumed obligations when joining the European intergovernmental organization, which means strategic partnership with consequences. However, ethnic conflicts do not allow full cooperation. Therefore, the visit of the European Movement of Armenia to Baku planned for November was delayed for this reason. Permanent meetings in Tbilisi contribute little to peace, and there is a need for other meetings and events.

In countries with a totalitarian past, civil society must be more active in order to influence government decisions.

The Azerbaijani European Movement (AEM) in May of this year passed the first phase for permanent membership in IEM. The overall situation in the country, including the ethnic conflict, is as expected, he said.

Next Saturday the report on Azerbaijan will be presented at the IEM board meeting in Brussels, where they will make the final decision. -17D-
