Jamil Gasanli meeting with the European Commissioner Nils Mujzhnieks
The presidential candidate of the National Council Jamil Gasanli met with the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Mujzhnieks yesterday in Strasbourg. During the meeting they discussed the results of the presidential elections and the human rights situation .
Gasanli noted that the elections in Azerbaijan were held in a situation where there were more than 140 political prisoners in the country. He called on the Commissioner to pay particular attention to the arrests of the oppositionists Ilgar Mammadov, Tofig Yagublu, Yadigar Sadygov, Gurban Mammadov and Nemat Panahli, the journalists Parviz Gashimli , Avaz Zeynalov and Hilal Mamedov, theologian Taleh Baghirzadeh, youth activists of NIDA and others.
Mujzhnieks said that he was familiar with the affairs of the said persons, and in the course of his visit to Baku, met with Ilgar Mammadov and young activists at the prison.
Mujzhnieks expressed regret that the findings of the PACE observation mission contradicted the facts estimated by ODIHR.

Arrested economist Fazil Gasimov has reportedly faced pressure after protesting the interruption of a phone call with his family on November 16. "The phone call was cut off, and Fazil demanded that the connection be restored. Then, Jalal Alizadeh, a detention center officer, along with his colleagues, forcibly removed Fazil from the phone room in the medical unit of the facility, tearing his jacket and dragging him across the floor before throwing him into a cell.
