The European Parliament discusses resolution on Safarov
The European Parliament discusses at this moment a resolution N2012/2785 (RSP) on Ramil Safarov, who killed in Hungary in 2004, Gurgen Margaryan. Safarov was extradited to Baku and pardoned by the authorities.
According to sources in Strasbourg, the text of the resolution states that at court Safarov admitted that he committed the murder and does not repent. The resolution also said that the Hungarian authorities could not know that Safarov would be pardoned in Azerbaijan. European Parliament condemns the decision of the President of Azerbaijan Ramil Safarov on pardon; it stresses that this decision was a gesture that further enhances the escalating tension and widens the gap between the two countries.
In addition, the resolution states that the decision to pardon Safarov refers to the Convention on extradition of convicts, but is contrary to the spirit of this international agreement when the convicted of one state served his term at the territory of another state. The European Parliament regarded the decision of the Azerbaijani president to pardon Safarov as «a violation of diplomatic assurances given by the Hungarian authorities."
The European Parliament also "condemns heroic honor, which Safarov was awarded in Azerbaijan, and decided to raise him to the rank of Major, and pay for time spent in custody, and is concerned by this example for future generations." -02D-
