Activist M. Zulfugarly Reports on Attempt to Run into Him in Imishli
Baku / 06.11.19 / Turan: The journalist and activist Mahbub Zulfugarly, who lives in the Imishli region, announced an attempt to run into him on Wednesday.
“On November 6, at 12.38 in the center of Imishli, an attempt was made to drive into me by a car. I often go to this place to visit my friend, who works nearby. Today, when I left him and crossed Hazi Aslanov Street, I noticed the seventh model Zhiguli car moving at high speed right at me, the color of coffee with milk. On this street, traffic usually does not exceed a speed of 20-30 km / h. However, this car rushed at high speed right at me. At first I tried to step back, but saw the car was still moving towards me. Then I quickly went forward into the oncoming lane. The car moving along it managed to brake, and I managed to cross the road,” Zulfugarly told Turan.
He said that on November 7 he would send a letter to the Interior Ministry and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev with a request to investigate the incident.
According to him, there are a number of state institutions located around, for example, the main post office, the education department, many private facilities and the moment of an attempt to run into him may fall on video surveillance footage.
Zulfugarly believes that local authorities and security forces may stand behind the possible attempt.
In particular, the other day, he wrote in the media that the son of a local security official was among those who detained and beat the Popular Front Party leader Ali Karimli at a rally in Baku on October 19.
“For many years we have been cooperating with the human rights activist Ogtay Gyulalyev. Apparently what happened to him was also "inspired" against me, being an assassination attempt. For exposing the facts of corruption, my brothers and I are constantly under pressure, we are fined for not committed violations of the traffic rules, and tax claims are presented. Already on trumped-up charges I have already been sent to prison for six months,” Zulfugarly said.
It was not possible to get comments in the law enforcement bodies of the Imishli district.
Zulfugarly actively participated in the work of the headquarters of the Kura civil society, which advocated for the protection of the rights of local residents affected by the devastating floods on the Kura River in the spring of 2010.
In July 2017, he was sentenced to 5 months of imprisonment in a libel suit brought in private charge by one of the local officials in Imishli. —06D-
