A.Orujlu: Azerbaijan should improve relations with the West

«Sochi meeting did not produce expected results. Russia also  expected something  from the meeting; and  Armenia is just playing the role of spokesman of Russia, acting as an instrument of pressure, said in an interview with Turan the  head of the Research Center "East-West" Arastun Orujlu.

Sochi meeting was not on the agenda before  the Azerbaijani servicemen were killed on the front line.

Within three days the authorities were at a loss, knowing  there is a message behind it. Confusion also meant that the military rhetoric, talking from a position of strength and display of military might  do not  have any sense. Just after that  the President of Azerbaijan  left for Sochi, said Orujlu.

Sochi meeting was not to settle the conflict. It  was held to  put pressure on Azerbaijan, forcing it join the Eurasian and the Customs Unions. The mechanisms of pressure on Baku are provocations on the

Caspian Sea, threats to energy sources, separatism in the north of the country, and religious radicalism. In addition, the use of pro-Russian structures as "billionaires club," says Orujlu.

With regard to internal factors,  Moscow has a wide network of agents - a well-organized "fifth column."

Therefore, under such situation, Azerbaijan  should improve relations with the West. "In recent years, these relationships have been spoiled and largely thanks to the pro-Russian forces,  that launched a campaign of pressure on civil society, the repression against supporters of Western ideas and values of American NGOs. This must be stopped, but only  Ilham Aliyev can do it," said Orujlu.

Azerbaijan needs an alternative ally to balance the pressure coming from the north. A good example is Ukraine. However, after approaching the West, Ukraine lost the Crimea. However,   for 25 years Azerbaijan cannot return Karabakh without separating from Russia.

Today, through the  U.S. Co-chair  of the OSCE Minsk Group  the State Department speaks about  unconditional release of  seven occupied regions around Karabakh. Moscow, however, does not claim it,. said Orujlu.-03B-
