G. Alibeyli: Azerbaijan Not Ready for Free, Democratic and Fair Elections
The socio-political situation in Azerbaijan is not conducive to the holding of free, democratic and fair elections, told Objective TV the Chairman of the Aydinlar (Intellectuals) Party Gulamhuseyn Alibayli.
Public confidence will not appear immediately, it may appear as a result of the great work of activists and the political will of the authorities. Such an atmosphere of trust in the electoral system is created over the years.
Today, however, the regime, by contrast, uses all the administrative means to retain power without considering the opinion and the interests of the electorate. In such circumstances, it is difficult to fight with the machine of total falsification, despite the fact that there has been a peak of human rights violations. In particular, they violate the freedom of assembly, media, property rights, freedom of expression, etc.
Corruption has penetrated all levels of society, and all activities. The situation is exacerbated, and discontent spills over at the first significant occasion. The events in Guba on March 1 are an example of such discontent with the crime control in the region.
Next year there will be presidential elections, and the political opposition is obliged to cardinally change the pre-election situation, and affect the activity of the electorate, said Alibayli.
In Azerbaijan, after 1992 there was no democratic election, so people have forgotten the taste of real election results and do not trust the electoral commissions. The electoral code should be substantially changed and reforms in this sector should negate the possibility of the influence of officials on the results of the vote.
Alibayli is against the "search for a single candidate" in the camp of the opposition. The task of the opposition is to change the pre-election situation and create conditions for public confidence. Experience shows that during the election the monitoring by observers from the opposition was weak. After the announcement of the election results nobody appealed to the court (up to the European Court). Political opposition is fragmented, and a year before the election its camps are fighting not for democratic reforms, but for their own interests.
Alibayli said that the party leadership considers it necessary to provide his nomination for the presidency. -17D-
